It was a comeback victory for the Humboldt Broncos on Friday night, as they scored three goals in the final 4:06 to defeat the Melfort Mustangs 4–2.
Connor Miller led the way with a pair of goals for the Broncos.
The Broncos had plenty of opportunities early, but it was the Mustangs who struck first. Zayden Sadlemyer found Cooper Atkinson in the slot, and he buried his third goal of the season to give Melfort the lead.
In the second period, Humboldt evened the score when Miller followed up on a loose rebound to notch his 14th goal of the year.
After a back-and-forth opening 40 minutes that featured only two penalties, the game turned chaotic when both teams combined for six penalties in a 4:04 span. Despite each side receiving three power plays during that stretch, neither team capitalized, and the game remained tied.
Shortly after the barrage of penalties, the Mustangs regained the lead as Austin Shepherd scored.
The Broncos responded late in the third period. Avery Lowe, playing in his first game since November 1, scored his sixth goal of the season to tie the game at 2–2.
Just over two minutes later, Miller netted what proved to be the game-winning goal, once again knocking in a loose rebound to give the Broncos the lead.
With 54 seconds remaining, Tyce Penrod sealed the victory with an empty-net goal as the Broncos earned their first road win since November 1 in Kindersley, posting a 4–2 decision over the Mustangs.
Brady Holtvogt made 32 saves to earn his second win of the season. Owen Chapman and Kristian Lacelle each recorded a pair of assists, while Jacob Strizzi added an assist to remain tied for the league lead in points with 45.
