The Humboldt Broncos are proud to announce that another graduating player has found his post-secondary home.
2-year Bronco’ veteran, Lucas Ceccarelli has committed to the BCIHL’s Simon Fraser University and will become a member of the Red Leafs for the 2023-24 season while pursuing his education.
Ceccarelli was the epitome of consistency on both sides of the puck during his 130-game tenure with the Broncos.
“He was a major contributor on and off the ice for us. One of the best defensive sticks I’ve seen in this league in my time, and his ability to combine that with a point-per-game offence makes him a special player,” said Head Coach and GM, Scott Barney.
Ceccarelli joined the Broncos prior to the 2021-22 season and immediately cemented himself as that consistent threat with 46 points (18g, 28a) in 56 games. This past season, as a 20-year-old, the Ontario native continued to excel with 55 points (14g, 41a) in 54 games.
“He was a pleasure to coach everyday and was highly respected by all of his teammates. We’re surely going to miss him in our lineup and it’s a big hole to fill at the centre position because he did it so well. On the other end, we couldn’t be happier for him and look forward to following his next step in his education and hockey career,” Barney added.
What makes Ceccarelli’s game even more impressive; he wasn’t a regular member on the powerplay, meaning the majority of his points came 5-on-5. Out of his 100-career regular-season points, just 11 came on the man-advantage.
His defensive awareness and ability translated perfectly to the penalty kill. Easily one of the best and brightest in the SJHL for two-straight years.
In 2021-22 he led the SJHL with 4 shorthanded goals. His encore in 2023 was also leading the league, but this time in shorthanded points, with 8.
Simon Fraser University are 4-time BCHIL champions and play out of Burnaby, BC.
The Humboldt Broncos and the City of Humboldt would like to congratulate Lucas and his family on the commitment to Simon Fraser University.
