Head Coach and GM, Scott Barney Signs 5-Year Contract with Broncos

The Humboldt Broncos are pleased to announce that Head Coach and GM, Scott Barney has agreed to a 5-year contract with the Broncos starting in the 2023-24 SJHL season.

Barney has been with the Broncos since the 2018-19 season, initially as the team’s assistant coach, before being promoted to the Head Coach and GM midway through his first year.

Since then, Barney has been among the most winningest coaches in the SJHL over his tenure with an overall record of 132-55-9-2.

“The Humboldt Broncos’ board is proud and excited to extend Scott for another 5 seasons. He’s done an incredible job both on the ice putting together a consistently competitive team every year, and also with our players in development and post-secondary education opportunities. We are proud to have him, and his family in the community of Humboldt.” – Humbodlt Broncos Board of Directors

Barney’s track record on the ice as a coach has led the Broncos to the playoffs in every season at the helm. The Broncos have finished 2nd place in back-to-back seasons and won the Global Ag Risk Division in the 2021-22 season.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Humboldt Broncos’ Board of Directors for having the confidence and trust in the job we have done here and will continue to do. Our goal every time we step on the ice is how can we be better as individuals and as a team. Being part of the Broncos’ organization is truly something special for everyone involved. The community is fantastic, and my family has enjoyed every minute of being in Humboldt. We can’t wait to create more memories together,” said Barney.

In addition to the production, the Broncos have been one of the most successful teams in terms of developing players to post-secondary careers and education.

Just this past season, the Broncos graduated 10 players to various post-secondary schools. Four players found homes at the highest level with NCAA Division I commitments while four more announced commitments to USPORTS, one to the BCHIL and one with a professional tryout in the ECHL.

In total, Barney has helped 31 players find commitments (10-NCAA Div I, 5-NCAA DIV III, 12-USPORTS, 1-ACAC, 2-BCIHL, 1-pro tryout)

“Theres a lot of opportunities for the players who have come through in the past few years. They all work extremely hard to get to where they want to be, and it’s our job to help them along the way. We will continue to make Humboldt the premier place to play in the SJHL and Canada,” Barney added.

The Humboldt Broncos and the City of Humboldt are proud to have the Barney family for another 5 years with the team and in the community.
