Humboldt Broncos Announce Assistant Coach to close the 18/19 Season

HUMBOLDT, SK – January 1, 2019 – Humboldt Broncos Interim Head Coach Scott Barney is pleased to announce Troy Smith as the team’s Assistant Coach for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.

Smith, most recently was the Head Coach of the Saginaw Spirit in the Ontario Hockey League. Previously, Smith a Hamilton, Ontario native, was the Associate Coach and Assistant General Manager of the Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL) from 2015-2017. Smith started his coaching career spending nine years with the Kitchener Rangers; two as Head Coach and seven years as an Assistant, winning the OHL Championship in 2008 under San Jose Sharks Coach Peter DeBoer.

Internationally, Smith has represented Canada seven times.  Five times he has been an Assistant Coach with the U17 Program, twice as a Head Coach and once as Video Coach of the 2009 Team Canada U18 team.

As a player Smith played four years for the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL, and was a student athlete at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, winning a National Championship in 2004. Professionally, he made stops in the East Coast Hockey League, United Hockey League and Europe.

Troy states, “I am thankful that Scott has provided me this opportunity.  I am excited and energized to get to know our players and join the Humboldt community.  We have a lot of work to be done in a short amount of time and am really looking forward to an exciting second half.”
