Broncos bounce Mustangs in five games; move onto semi-finals for first time since 2014

THE BRONCOS NEEDED JUST FIVE GAMES TO WIN THE BOURGAULT CUP AND BEAT MELFORT IN THE SJHL QUARTER-FINALS.

The Broncos are off to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) semi-finals for the first time since 2014.

Saturday in Melfort, Parker Tobin made 37 saves helping Humboldt blank the Mustangs 3-0 clinching the Bourgault Cup in five games. Tobin backed up Jacob Wassermann for games one and two before taking over and subsequently won three straight games in the series. The 18-year-old netminder said the team was great in front of him in the victories.

“When you get in the crease you don’t want to give it up as much as I love Jacob. The boys were playing well, it was nice to be behind them. They made my job easy,” Tobin said.

Jaxon Joseph opened the scoring in the first period with his sixth goal of the series against his former team. Logan Schatz made it 2-0 with a power-play goal in the second frame, Nick Shumlanski added his fourth of the series in the third period to cap the scoring. Tobin stopped short of saying the series was easy for them despite a four to one game advantage.

“Every game was a battle and they took game two quite handily. I wouldn’t say it was too easy but there was an expectation we not only could do this, we should do this,” he said.

The line of Joseph, Schatz, and Shumlanski scored 12 goals and provided 26 points in just five games. For the Broncos’ captain, the series win was a long time coming.

“It’s been a battle my whole career here, we’ve had struggles since day one. To have this first series win is awesome. I love everyone in that room and it’s just a real cool feeling,” Schatz said.

The Broncos will now meet the Nipawin Hawks in the semi-finals. Last season Nipawin swept Humboldt in the first round. Game dates will be announced soon.
