Broncos Acquire Defenseman McIlwain from AJHL’s Grand Prairie

The Humboldt Broncos have acquired 2005-born defenseman Oakley McIlwain from the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s as well as future considerations in exchange for Spencer Hughes.

“Oakley’s a good-sized rangy D-man that can skate and play on both sides of the puck very well. He’s young, already established a strong pedigree to his game and has a ton of upside. He’s the former AAA defenseman of the year. He’s a player were very excited to build into this year and for future success.” Said Head Coach and GM, Scott Barney.

McIlwain, currently in his rookie season, has four assists in 15 games with the Grand Prairie Storm. In his final year of AAA hockey last season with the Lloydminster Bobcats U18 program, he led the league in goals by a defenseman with 11 and finished third in points with 31.

McIlwain was also drafted in the 2020 WHL draft, 148th overall by the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Hughes departs the Broncos having played 27 games in his first season picking up 14 points (4g, 10a).

The Humboldt Broncos and the City of Humboldt would like to welcome Oakley to the organization and community as well as thank Spencer for his commitment and contributions to the team.
