Despite out shooting their opponents, again, the Broncos extended their losing streak to three with a 6-3 loss in Estevan Saturday.
The Broncos opened the scoring in the first period with Stephan Wack’s second of the year and first of the night but the Bruins’ Arthur Miller scored twice and TJ Irey chipped in putting Estevan ahead 3-1 in the second stanza.
Jaxon Joseph notched his seventh of the season and fourth as a Bronco in the first minute of the third frame, cutting the lead to 3-2.
Jake Fletcher widened the gap to a pair of goals again before the four minute mark of the period making it 4-2.
Wack drew Humboldt back within two near the 15 minute mark but that was as close as they would come.
Kaelen Holt scored, Jayden Davis hit the empty net.
Assistant coach Chris Beaudry said the southern road trip didn’t go as expected.
“No we would have liked to come away with four points this weekend, but there are some bright spots we can take. We are playing a much faster game, we’re generating a lot of chances, and we are eliminating a lot of the other team’s chances,” he said during the bus home.
Humboldt fired 40 shots on Maxim Sidelnik but could only beat him twice; Sam-Jaxon Visscher allowed five on 33 attempts. Beaudry said they are allowing fixable opportunities.
“I think some of the goals are just simple mistakes we are correcting. They are part of the learning process. We know that there will be mistakes in a game, we just have to limit them to the non-dangerous areas of the ice,” he explained.
The Broncos will return to Elgar’s on Wednesday when the 7-15-0-1 Melville Millionaires visit. Beaudry said they will not take their next match-up for granted.
“Every night the guys put their skates on is a chance to get two points and we want to get those. We will prepare like we have all year and it’ll be an exciting night Wednesday at the EPA,” Beaudry said.
Face-off is 7:30 p.m.
