Broncos Sign 05’ Forward Spencer Hughes

The Humboldt Broncos are proud to announce the signing of 2005 born forward, Spencer Hughes for the 2023/24 Season.

Hughes, originally committed to the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits for the upcoming season, will instead bring his talents to Humboldt after playing last season in the Canadian High School (CAHS) circuit with Stanstead College in Quebec. In 54 games with Stanstead, Hughes finished second on the team in scoring, at over a point-per-game pace, with 57 points (27g, 30a).

“Spencer had a great season last year. He’s a guy we’ve seen a lot of film on, and even more when he became available. We feel Spencer has high-end, dynamic offensive tools who can push the pace at an elite level with his skating ability. We have only one returning left-shot forward from last season, so to add Spencer is great for our group,” said Head Coach and GM, Scott Barney.

Hughes, an 18-year-old from Mississauga, ON, although having played high school hockey last season, will not be entering the SJHL as a rookie. The 5’10, 170lbs forward played in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) as a 16-year-old, where he picked up 38 points (15g,23a) in 48 games.

In 2021, Hughes was drafted by the Mississauga Steelheads in the OHL Priority Selection Draft.

The Humboldt Broncos preseason will begin on September 8th when they welcome the Kindersley Klippers to the Elgar Petersen Arena.

The Broncos and the City of Humboldt would like to welcome Spencer and his family to the organization and community.
