The Humboldt Broncos went into Melfort and defeated the Mustangs to start the home and home set on Friday, but the Mustangs answered right back in Humboldt on Saturday to split the series.

The Broncos hosted the Mustangs on Saturday, January 18th where a second-period burst from the Mustangs propelled them to a 5-2 victory.

The Broncos allowed the game’s opening goal for the 6th straight game, as Melfort’s Christian Albertson scored on their first shot of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Broncos tied it up late in the opening frame with Spencer McHardy’s 2nd goal of the year, and the two teams entered the second period tied at one.

In the second period, the Mustangs scored three unanswered goals by Kenzie Arnold, Zach Anderson, and Alex Rondeau to take a 4-1 lead midway through the game. Humboldt’s Max Gudnason scored late in the second period to get the Broncos within two, but that was as close as they would get.

Kenzie Arnold added an empty-net goal in the thrid and Mustang’s goalie’ Shawn Parkinson stopped 33 of 35 shots faced in net en route to a 5-2 victory.

With the loss, the Broncos fell to 4-2-1-0 in 2020 and remain in 7th place in the SJHL standings.

The SJHL will take a short break for the SJHL/ MJHL Showcase taking place in Regina on January 22nd and 23rd. When the six Broncos attending the showcase return, the team will have a busy weekend when they travel to Weyburn, Estevan, and Notre Dame for three games in three days on January 24th, 25th, and 26th, respectively.
