The Humboldt Broncos training camp concluded on Sunday with their annual green and gold game which they have now fittingly termed the Elgar Petersen Cup.
Team gold won the entertaining contest by the count of 7-5.
Scoring goals for the winning side was veterans Trevor Posch, Connor Swystun, Chris Van Os-Shaw(2) plus hopefuls Dawson Atamanchuk, Scott Kobe and Dayden Dvernichuk. Tallying for the green side was Laramie Kostelansky, Michael Korol, Daniel McKitrick and Jacob Leicht added a pair.
Overall, the four days was exactly what second year bench boss Darcy Haugan had envisioned.
“Yeah you definitely know who the players are and you don’t have to look down at your notes quite as much. You recognize kids, you recognize faces, it definitely makes it easier. We are very happy with how competitive camp was, it’s just the first step right now. We will start to mold this team during pre-season then the fun begins in a couple weeks.”
That starts Monday afternoon when the Broncos travel to Kindersley to meet the Klippers who will also play their first game of the exhibition schedule.
Haugan said the camp was led by their veterans which is a good feeling as they obviously want to improve on last season’s 11th place finish.
“They’ve been great, it all started with the fitness testing last Wednesday, everyone of them beat last year’s scores and test results. They worked hard this summer, we have been very pleased with that. Then the young guys come in, from what I’ve been told it’s probably the best camp in four years.”
The pre-season schedule will continue Wednesday in Melville, they will then travel to Melfort Friday night, that game will be broadcasted on 107.5 Bolt FM starting at 7:15. On the weekend they will host the Mustangs Saturday night followed by a return visit from the Klippers Sunday.
They do it for real starting September 17th at the EPA against the Notre Dame Hounds.
