Jacob Boucher led with 5 points, and the Humboldt Broncos set the bar for the SJHL’s game-high in goals with an 11-4 win over the Nipawin Hawks on Friday night.

The taste of defeat must have been very bitter for the Broncos.

Humboldt suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday after opening the season on an eight-game winning streak. They certainly bounced back in a big way with 11 goals scored, bringing their season total to 54 in just 10 games, the most in the SJHL.

The Broncos were on pursuit from the drop of the puck, building a 6-1 lead after the first period, propelled by Sam Marburg, Alec Saretzky, Ben Kotylak, Cage Newans, and two goals from Jacob Boucher.

Nipawin was able to close the gap to 6-3 in the second period with both goals coming from the SJHL goal scoring leader, Maguire Ratzlaff. Tim Kim scored his third of the season to extend the Broncos lead to 7-3 going into the third period.

Humboldt did not let up the pace in the third, with two players completing their hat-tricks.

Newans scored his second and third goal of the game to give the Broncos a 9-3 lead. Marburg tucked home his second of the game, and Boucher added his third goal and fifth point of the night for the 11th marker.

Nipawin scored one last time on the power play from Alex Ochitwa for their fourth goal of the game.

This was Boucher’s second game after making his Bronco debut on Tuesday. He now has 6 points in 2 games.

Ben Motew got the start in net and stopped 29 of 33 shots faced to improve his record to 3-0-0.

The Broncos currently sit in second place in the SJHL with a 9-1-0-0 record, just three points back on the Battlefords North Stars. They’ll look to close the gap and wrap up the weekend on Saturday when Humboldt plays host to the Melville Millionaires.
