After opening the season with five straight wins, the Humboldt Broncos suffered their third consecutive loss on Saturday night, falling 5–2 to the Yorkton Terriers.
The Broncos opened the scoring in the first period when Connor Miller forced a turnover behind the Terriers’ net and found Tyrone Sobry, who fired home his first goal as a member of the Broncos.
Humboldt extended its lead to two after Jacob Strizzi scored his league-leading eighth goal of the season.
However, for the second straight night, the Terriers sparked a comeback with a late first-period goal, as Mikale Budz’s shot squeezed past Charlie Tritt’s blocker and inside the post.
Yorkton came out strong after the intermission, with Kale Johns tying the game just 27 seconds into the second period.
In what proved to be the turning point of the game, the Terriers capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play, with Evan Auld scoring the eventual game-winning goal.
The Broncos came out firing in the final period but were unable to solve the Terriers’ goaltender, Callum Creig.
Tylan Henrikson added a late power-play goal for Yorkton, and Cash Lanigan sealed the win with an empty-netter.
Despite the loss, Tritt made 39 saves in goal for the Broncos. Korte and Miller each recorded two assists.
Yorkton went 2-for-6 on the power play, while Humboldt was 0-for-2.
The Broncos will look to return to winning ways on Tuesday, seeking redemption as they face the Flin Flon Bombers for the first time since last season’s first-round playoff series, in which the Bombers eliminated Humboldt in six games.
