The Humboldt Broncos continued their winning ways on Tuesday night with a convincing 3-0 win over the Weyburn Red Wings.
The game was Connor Miller’s 100th career SJHL game, and he got the scoring started for the Broncos just 44 seconds into the first period, tucking a shot passed Weyburn goaltender Ty Matonovich, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
Miller would also add an assist on the powerplay in the second period, firing a quick pass to Jacob Strizzi who found an open net, increasing the Bronco lead to two goals.
The score would remain that way until Tyce Penrod took advantage of a turnover in the neutral zone and slid the puck into the empty net with 2:04 left in the third period, sealing the Broncos victory.
Broncos’ Associate Coach Carter Hansen says after a slow start to the season, it was good to see Miller find his game in the victory.
“He definitely got us going in the right direction, (his goal) was a tone-setter for us, and I thought his line actually provided a lot of fuel for us,” Hansen said. “Congratulations to Connor for getting his 100th game, getting two points, and the win to boot. That’s a pretty happy Tuesday for a guy like that.”
Charlie Tritt was yet again sensational in the Broncos crease, stopping all 36 shots he faced. Tritt has now faced 100 shots through three games as a Humboldt Broncos goaltender and has stopped all but one of them.
Hansen says Tritt’s steady play helps boost the team’s confidence.
“He’s been making every save we’ve asked him to make, I think even though there was 36 shots (Tuesday) night, I feel like most of those were from the outside, and he’s stopping those ones every single time,” Hansen said. “I think we’ve been really good at limiting the damage of giving up shots right in front of the net, eight in that ‘house’ area, and I think that’s gone a long way in helping Charlie, but again, the couple breakdowns we do have, he’s been there every single time for us.”
Matonovich had 35 saves in the losing effort for Weyburn.
The Humboldt Broncos are on the road Friday night when they visit the Melville Millionaires. The Broncos return to Elgar Petersen Arena on Saturday when they welcome Melville to town.
Both games can be heard on 107.5 Bolt FM. Puck drop is at 7:30 for both contests, and the pre-game show begins at 7:15.
