The Humboldt Broncos brought and end to Weyburn’s seven game winning streak, defeating the Red Wings 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena.
After losing their first four games of the regular season, Weyburn rattled off seven straight victories and was the hottest team in the SJHL as they rolled into the EPA. It was the same building where the Broncos eliminated the Red Wings from the playoffs seven months prior, and once again, Humboldt got the last laugh.
The Broncos got off to a strong start scoring within the opening four minutes in both the first and second period, building a 2-0 lead thanks to Kye Benoche (5) and Connor Miller’s (3) goals, respectively.
Weyburn found some footing and cut the lead with a turnover forced goal from Braigh LeGrandeur, and in the third period, a shorthanded marker from Jerome Maharaj as the equalizer.
Boris Kofman scored his 5th goal of the season while extending in his point streak to six games to restore the Broncos lead.
Midway though the final frame, Max Chakrabarti picked up the only powerplay goal of the night, hemming the score at 3-3 and forcing overtime.
Once again, 17-year-old, Brady Holtvogt earned the goaltending start for Humboldt and was stellar, stopping 38 of 41 shots. Meanwhile, Weyburn’s Angelo Zol turned aside 43 of 47 Broncos’ shots in the loss.
The overtime frame provided the highlight of the night with one of the year’s prettiest passes. Benoche threw a three-line saucer pass from his own zone which landed perfectly on the opposition’s blue line, right on the tape of McIlwain, who made sure he stayed onside before beating Zol low-glove for his second goal of the season and the game winner.
The Broncos now hold a 7-3-1-0 record as they head up North to take on the Flin Flon Bombers for a pair of games in the Whitney Forum on Friday and Saturday.
