The Humboldt Broncos have been snake bitten, mustering just one goal in the last 120 minutes of play.
After dropping a 1-0 defeat to the Nipawin Hawks last Saturday, the Broncos suffered their second straight one goal loss, falling 2-1 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday.
Gabriel Fillion opened the scoring for Humboldt on the powerplay for his ninth of the season and a 1-0 lead heading into the second frame. Friday’s game marked the first regulation loss for Humboldt when they score the game’s opening goal. (10-1-1-0)
Although the Broncos amounted to 49 shots on net, no more offence succeeded after Filion’s marker. Graham Brown turned aside one of his best performances in his inaugural Ice Wolves season, stopping 48 for his 6th victory.
Taite Donkin and Mason Bueckert found the back of the net in the second period, which was all the goals La Ronge would need.
The Broncos penalty kill was the bright spot, denying all five Ice Wolves powerplays. The Broncos have now killed off 23 straight powerplays.
Edouard Gauthier was in net for Humboldt and turned aside 21 of 23 while dropping his record to 6-4-0 on the year.
A chance at revenge will come sooner than a standard back-to-back schedule. The Broncos and Ice Wolves will reunite for a matinee affair at 2:30pm on Saturday to wrap up their four-game season series.
